Excerpt: Raising a few poultry birds on the backyard is a common feature of the sub-sistence farming system of Nepal, except for people of some castes who refrain from consumption of egg and poultry meat on religious ground. This also has been changing. While only about one-third of the farm households raised poultry birds in 1981/82, it increased to 52% in 1991/92 and to 57% in 2001-02. However, it is the commercial sector that has been the main source of growth of the poultry sector in Nepal and one of the fastest growing segments of the agricultural economy.
